Initial – Post-Secondary Scholarship Application [Download]
- One time $1000.00 scholarships to graduating high or vocational school students intending on enrolling in a program of study at a trade-school, college, or university.
- This scholarship is limited to children and grandchildren of VFW Post 2947 members who will graduate high school this year and intend to pursue a college degree upon graduation.
- Due by the second Friday in April
Renewal – Post-Secondary Scholarship Application [Download]
- One-time $500.00 scholarship to trade-school, college, or university students continuing their education.
- This scholarship is limited to children and grandchildren of VFW Post 2947 members who are continuing their education at a trade-school, college, or university. Only one renewal allowed per student.
- Due by the first Friday in June
VFW Auxiliary Terra State Community College Scholarship [Download]
- Students who are currently serving or are honorably discharged veterans are eligible to apply for the $500 scholarship for Fall semester donated by the VFW Auxiliary Post 2947. The application deadline is April 1st for the following fall semester.
- The qualifications are (a) Accepted at Terra State Community College & (b) Have a good academic record
VFW National Youth Scholarships
- The Voice of Democracy program is the Veterans of Foreign Wars’ premier scholarship competition for high school students in grades 9-12. Students write and record an audio essay on a patriotic theme chosen annually by the VFW. The program encourages students to reflect on democracy, citizenship, and American values while developing communication and critical-thinking skills. National scholarships total more than $1 million annually, with the national first-place winner receiving a $35,000 scholarship. For 2026-2027, the theme is“What a Veteran Taught Me About America.” Students submit their entries through a local VFW Post by October 31.
- Patriot’s Pen is a nationwide essay competition for students in grades 6-8. Participants write a 300-400 word essay addressing a patriotic theme selected annually by the VFW. The contest encourages middle school students to explore America’s history, democratic principles, and civic responsibilities while strengthening their writing skills. Winners compete through Post, District, State, and National levels, with scholarships and awards totaling more than $1 million. The national first-place winner receives a $5,000 award. The 2026-2027 theme is also“What a Veteran Taught Me About America.” Entries are due to local VFW Posts by October 31.
